ABC Wednesday - V is for...

The 'V'isitor with a 'V'oracious Appetite

Snapped this little chap, chomping on a snail (shell and everything!) behind one of our flowerpots. Quite odd to see a Hedgehog in the daytime so I had to take a few snaps of him. He didn't seem particularly phased by his new-found celebrity and happily chomped on some of our left over Sunday lunch.

(I say 'chap' - could be a 'chap-ess'!!)

For more ABC Wednesday snaps visit Mrs Nesbitt's Place.

Nice little fellow! Just three advices:
1. Don't give him milk - yhey can't handle it.
2. They may carry salmonella
3. Don't pat him...

Hi Gary. I'm new to blogging have just posted my own blog this week. I had a knee op on Sat so needed something to do while i recover. I notice that you suffer with Crohns. My cousins daughter has this also and she is having a op later this month. So i wish you well stay positive the mind is a great healer. Your blogs are terrific how did you manage to get so many people looking at them? Your hedgehog is cute. I haven't seen one in years, however living near the canal in Selby however I am lucky that i do see Kingfishers, I also saw a Red Kite near the woods, they are really quite large and very majestic flyers. You take care now be well Kev

I don't think I've ever seen one in real life. But we have lots of raccoons and beavers here. I'd be careful not to go near it while it's eating, too, as it'll probably bite!

Looks a bit prickly and a bit too rat like for me. I guess i would actualy like to see him in real life though.
Excellent choice for V.

So that's why I don't see them — they are night visitors! That's handy that they eat snails. I love these guys, they are just so cute! Thank you for the terrific photos.

Super cute! It makes me want to live in hedgehog country - which California isn't. I'm happy that you thought of a way to utilize V to display them.

Thanks everyone.

The hedgehog's spines are quite sharp, and they do carry lice and fleas but, wearing gloves, they can be handled and are actually quite tame (Just very shy / timid) I never knew they ate snails - so they are definitely welcome visitors. I know they like cat food so I put some out for him later that night.

Some kids at school have one as a pet, but they are not native here.
